The former Director of Speechwriting for President Barack Obama, Keenan was tasked with some of the President’s most notable speeches, such as that on the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday. A political scientist at Northwestern University, he worked in the Senate office of Ted Kennedy after his graduation, before studying for a Master’s in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. He then took on a full-time position in Obama’s presidential campaign, before his promotion to Deputy Director of Speechwriting. In 2013, Keenan became Director of Speechwriting, and his work was characterised by focus “on individual, hard-work stories, as parables for what is difficult, but still possible, in America”.
