Adam Wagner: Human rights barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and former Special Advisor to the Joint Committee on Human Rights COVID-19 inquiry. He hosts the Better Human podcast and is a Visiting Professor of Law at Goldsmiths University, London.
As Benjamin Franklin said, ‘those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety’. This balance has never been more pressing, after more than eighteen months of moving in and out of lockdowns and waiting for the next to come. Some argue that restrictions are necessary in order to protect society, while others feel that they force us to make unacceptable lifestyle changes. Though we are returning to a world that resembles pre-pandemic life, we cannot ignore the imprint left by the past year. Would we be willing to make similar sacrifices again?
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
