Have you ever felt shame around money? In this video, I’ll share 5 specific tips for breaking free from money shame…

Money shame is the feeling that because of your financial situation, something is wrong with you or you’re somehow unworthy.

Bari Tessler, author of The Art of Money: A Life-Changing Guide to Financial Happiness,” says “When it comes to money, shame is present somewhere in us all, whether it’s right at the surface or swept under the rug, prompting big changes or holding us back from even starting our money healing journey.”

Maybe you think you’re not good with money and you don’t want to think about it!

But that’s a TRAP that has you stuck in a money shame cycle because when you don’t want to look at or think about your money, the problems get worse, which has you want to avoid it even more, which makes the problems get even worse, etc.

Even if you have millions of dollars, you might feel shame around not knowing how to invest your money wisely so you hand it all over to a financial advisor so you don’t have to look at it, which often means that your money isn’t growing like it should.

It’s easy to feel like you’re the only one with financial issues, but the truth is that very few people are “on top of things” when it comes to money.

According to Chris Hogan, author of Retire Inspired, over 60% of people in the United States have less than $25,000 saved for retirement.

Most people who DO have a handle on their finances weren’t born with an innate knowledge of how to manage and invest money wisely… they had to learn.

It’s not your fault you haven’t learned something, but once you realize that there’s something you don’t know yet, you can increase your financial education and have a whole new relationship with money.

Here are 5 tips for breaking free from money shame:

First of all, realize that you are not alone!

Because money is such a taboo subject in a lot of families and communities, we tend not to realize how pervasive money stress is.

So if possible, I encourage you to find people that you can talk about money with.

Second, I encourage you to let go of perfection.

Human beings learn by making mistakes, and if you’re not willing to ever make a mistake, you’re really limiting your ability to learn and grow.

Third, if you notice yourself feeling money shame, it’s great to have a go-to tool or process for shifting your emotional state.

One of my all time favorite ways to do that is EFT, which stands for “Emotional Freedom Technique.”

Fourth, make an ongoing practice of increasing your financial education, which means learning how to make, save, manage, invest and protect your money.

Fifth, schedule a regular Money Date.

Your Money Date is when you carve out sacred time in your schedule to give your money your full attention.

When you have regular Money Dates, you’ll break out of the money shame cycle I mentioned earlier and you’ll start to feel more “on top of things” when it comes to money.
