He also said Lewis Hamilton should “brush aside” the racist slur retired racer Nelson Piquet used to describe the 7x Formula 1 champion. After some outrage online for these comments, Piers Morgan gave Ecclestone the opportunity to come on Piers Morgan Uncensored to set the record straight.
In this full interview, Piers confronts the 91-year-old billionaire on his Putin comments and asks why Hamilton should brush away the use of the N-word. Bernie responds by saying he “doesn’t know the N-word used” and points out that he gave the first black Formula 1 driver a chance in the sport, referring to Willy T. Ribbs. Piers then shows the clip of Hamilton responding to Piquet’s comments saying older generation drivers with these old fashioned ideologies shouldn’t have a platform. Ecclestone responds by asking why Hamilton should get a platform to say what he said.
Piers then challenges Ecclestone for comparing using the N-word to commenting on someone’s size, remarking that being told you’re short “isn’t very nice”. Piers asks if he is genuinely comparing racist remarks to comments about weight and height and Ecclestone replies “well why not?”.
