Steven Paul Jobs was an influential American businessman, inventor, and investor renowned for co-founding Apple Inc. Jobs was also the founder of NeXT and the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar. He played an important role in the revolution of personal computer in the 1970s and 1980s alongside his early business partner, Steve Wozniak.

Born in San Francisco and adopted shortly thereafter, Jobs attended Reed College in 1972 but dropped out the same year. In 1974, he traveled through India in search of spiritual enlightenment and later delved into Zen Buddhism. In 1976, Jobs and Wozniak founded Apple. Their breakthrough came with the Apple II, introduced in 1977, which became one of the first successful mass-produced microcomputers.

In 1979, Jobs recognized the commercial potential of the Xerox Alto, an innovative computer with a graphical user interface (GUI) and a mouse. This insight led to the development of the Apple Lisa in 1983, which was not commercially successful, but paved the way for the groundbreaking Macintosh in 1984. The Macintosh was the first mass-produced computer to feature a GUI.

After a power struggle with Apple's board and then-CEO John Sculley, Jobs left Apple in 1985. He took some Apple employees with him to found NeXT, focusing on high-end computers for higher education and business markets.

In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, which became Pixar. Pixar's first major success, "Toy Story" (1995), was the first fully 3D-animated feature film, and the studio went on to produce 28 films.

Jobs returned to Apple as CEO in 1997, following Apple's acquisition of NeXT. He played a critical role in revitalizing Apple, which was on the brink of bankruptcy. Partnering with British designer Jony Ive, Jobs spearheaded a series of transformative products and services, including the iMac, iTunes, Mac OS X, Apple Store, iPod, iTunes Store, iPhone, App Store, and iPad.

In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which led to his death from tumor-related respiratory arrest in 2011. In 2022, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a testament to his lasting influence on technology and culture.
