Confucius, born Kong Qiu, was a Chinese philosopher from the Spring and Autumn period, revered as a key figure in Chinese thought and the first to advocate for widespread education in China. His teachings, known as Confucianism, focus on morality, social harmony, kindness, sincerity, and the responsibility of rulers to lead with virtue.

Confucius saw himself as a transmitter of values from earlier times, which he believed had been neglected. Under Emperor Wu of Han, Confucianism became officially recognized, with its texts required for government careers. Later, during the Tang and Song dynasties, Confucianism evolved into what is known as Neo-Confucianism and later New Confucianism. Throughout history, Confucianism has deeply influenced Chinese society and culture.

Traditionally, Confucius is believed to have authored or edited many ancient texts, including the Five Classics. However, modern scholars are cautious about attributing specific ideas directly to him, as some concepts may have originated earlier. His teachings were compiled in the Analects, but this was done many years after his death.
