🚨 The U.S. government is flagging naturalized citizens as potential non-citizens and threatening to remove them from voter rolls, and it's happening right now. A recent article in the Texas Tribune, published along with ProPublica, explains that the Department of Homeland Security rushed a tool called SAVE into use before it was ready, and the mistakes have been widespread. SAVE, the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, was originally used to check immigrants' eligibility for public benefits. Under Trump's executive order, it was rapidly expanded to verify the citizenship of millions of registered voters. The problem? DHS deployed it while still incomplete, and the system struggles to identify people born outside of the United States who later became U.S. citizens. ⚠️ In Texas alone, at least eighty-seven voters across twenty-nine counties were wrongly flagged. In Missouri, more than half of the flagged voters in one county turned out to be U.S. citizens. One woman was flagged at her own naturalization ceremony. Another, who was born in Argentina and has been a U.S. citizen for years, still had to prove it just to stay on the voter rolls. ⚖️ What's worse, when SAVE flags someone as a potential non-citizen, that person is also referred to DHS for possible criminal investigation. Searches across seven states covering thirty-five million registered voters found only 0.01% were potential non-citizens — consistent with what experts have always said. This isn't about election security.
