During his detention he was transferred across multiple states, including Boston, New York, Texas, and Arizona. Advocates say the case highlights long-standing concerns about medical care inside facilities run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Reports have warned that detainees sometimes face months-long waits for dental treatment while in custody. Damas is reportedly the tenth person to die in ICE custody in 2026, raising renewed questions about healthcare access in immigration detention. ⚖️
