The Department of Homeland Security has been shut down for thirty-two days, and the White House just made its first offer to Democrats, and it is almost nothing. 🚨 Administration officials sent a letter to Senate Republicans outlining narrow changes to immigration enforcement in exchange for reopening DHS. The proposal includes requiring officers to wear visible identification and state their agency when asked. It also includes limiting enforcement near so-called sensitive locations like hospitals and schools and expanding body camera use, though not requiring every officer to wear one. That may sound reasonable until you see what the White House refused to include. No ban on officers wearing masks to hide their identities during raids. No requirement for warrants before entering private homes or businesses. And no use-of-force policy, even after federal immigration officers killed two American citizens in Minneapolis. Those are the three demands that matter, and the administration rejected all of them. 📄 What they offered instead should have already been standard: identifying themselves, limits near sensitive locations, and some cameras. The government is offering the bare minimum and expecting credit for it. Meanwhile TSA workers are going without pay, calling out sick, and quitting, causing delays at airports as spring travel begins. For immigrant communities, the message is clear. People in power are still choosing unchecked enforcement over accountability. ⚖️ Those demanding masks be banned, warrants be required, and real accountability enforced are not asking for special treatment.
