Governor Ron DeSantis just publicly attacked the very sheriffs he appointed after they spoke out about immigration policy in Florida. 🚨 During a meeting of the state Immigration Enforcement Council, several sheriffs voted to send a letter to Congress and President Trump asking for a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who have no criminal record. Every council member present supported sending the letter. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, who chairs the council, had previously urged faster deportations. But now he says a pathway to citizenship for certain immigrants is simply common sense. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri also questioned current enforcement priorities, saying it is not right to target someone like a mother with three children who has lived in the country for fifteen years and is simply trying to earn a living. DeSantis rejected the idea outright and insisted Florida must keep pushing its aggressive immigration enforcement policies. But the officials making this recommendation are the same law-enforcement leaders he personally selected to advise him on immigration. After the vote, Judd said he received calls from other sheriffs across Florida expressing support for the council’s position.
