You might think a local arrest won’t affect your immigration status, but that’s a dangerous assumption ⚠️ In many places, local police share information with ICE, and if you’re flagged, they coordinate a direct handoff 🚨 Here’s how it happens: you’re arrested, maybe for a DUI, and spend a few days in jail. When the cell door opens, you’re not free—you’re transferred straight to ICE 💔 The same thing happens even after someone finishes a sentence. Instead of being released, they’re moved directly into immigration detention 📍 Once you’re in ICE custody, you’re in deportation proceedings. You now have to fight your case from detention unless you can get out ⚖️ Release may be possible through bond or a habeas corpus petition. And getting out matters because detention makes everything harder 📉 Working with your lawyer, gathering evidence, and preparing your case is much more difficult inside. Detention is also traumatic and can be dangerous 😔 This doesn’t just affect undocumented immigrants. Even green card holders can lose their status and face deportation over certain charges 📌 The bottom line: if you’re not a U.S. citizen, a local arrest can lead to ICE custody. And that transition can happen fast ⏳ If a loved one is detained, don’t wait. Speak with an immigration lawyer immediately to start planning ✊ If you need help with an asylum case or getting a loved one out of immigration detention, send the word “CONSULT” in a direct message 💬
