When do you actually find out the decision in your asylum case? 🤔 The answer depends entirely on whether your case is with USCIS or in immigration court, and understanding the difference can help you prepare for what comes next. For affirmative asylum cases with USCIS, the asylum officer will not tell you at the interview whether your case is approved or denied. 📄 They also will not hint at the outcome. Near the end of the interview, they’ll explain how you’ll receive the decision, either by returning to the asylum office or through the mail. If your decision is mailed, expect at least a few weeks of waiting. ⏳ While some people hear back quickly, many applicants wait four to six weeks or even several months before receiving anything. Immigration court works differently. ⚖️ Judges often give a decision the same day at the end of your individual hearing, which is the hearing where you tell your full story and answer difficult questions. But sometimes judges decide to issue a written decision later, and there’s no reliable timeline for when that will arrive. Whatever decision you receive, speak with an immigration lawyer immediately. 🚨 If you win asylum, you should seriously consider applying for permanent residency right away. If you receive a denial or deportation order, you need to act fast. I’m Brian Manning. If you need help with an asylum case or help getting a loved one out of immigration detention, please send me the word “CONSULT” in a direct message.
