A Major League Baseball employee who followed every rule, renewed every document, and built a life in this country is sitting in an ICE detention center in El Paso tonight. ⚾ CNN reports that Osvaldo Parela, a 34-year-old catching coordinator for the San Diego Padres, was arrested at an El Paso airport around 4 AM while trying to fly home to his wife and two young daughters in Arizona. Parela came to the United States from Venezuela in 2014 and applied for asylum. His family says he never let his work authorization lapse, renewing it every time it approached expiration, and that he is currently in the middle of an EB-2 visa process. The Department of Homeland Security’s response was that he had overstayed and that work authorization does not confer legal status. ⚖️ What they’re describing is the gap that exists for thousands of asylum seekers: people who applied, waited, and did everything the system asked, but whose underlying status remained technically unresolved while the government processed their cases. The Trump administration is now treating that gap as a reason to arrest people, not as a product of a slow and broken system. 🚨 Parela is not an outlier. He’s an example of exactly who these enforcement operations are targeting: a man with a job, a family, a pending visa application, and a decade of compliance, now in detention because the Trump administration has decided that doing everything right is not enough.
