history — and right now, with Christian nationalism dominating

the headlines, it has never been more urgent.

Was America founded as a Christian nation?

The Christian nationalists say yes.

The historians say no.

And the Founding Fathers themselves?

They said BOTH — and the truth is far more complicated

than either side wants to admit.

📜 THE CASE FOR:

✅ The overwhelming majority of colonists were Protestant Christians

✅ The Declaration of Independence references a Creator and

Divine Providence

✅ Many colonial charters explicitly cited the spread of

Christianity as a founding purpose

✅ "In God We Trust" appears on every piece of American currency

✅ Patrick Henry declared: "It cannot be emphasized too strongly

that this great nation was founded not by religionists

but by Christians"

✅ John Adams wrote: "Our Constitution was made only for a

moral and religious people"

✅ Benjamin Franklin called for daily prayer at the

Constitutional Convention saying: "God governs

in the affairs of men"

📜 THE CASE AGAINST:

✅ Not a single Founding Father made the claim that they

intended to create a Christian nation in any piece

of private correspondence or any public document

✅ On ly one of the 56 Founding Fathers was a member

of the clergy — and James Madison actively objected

to chaplains opening Congressional proceedings with prayer

✅ Th e Constitution contains zero references to Jesus Christ,

Christianity, or the Bible

✅ The First Amendment explicitly states "Congress shall

make no law respecting an establishment of religion" —

language the Founders chose deliberately

✅ Ar ticle VI Section III states "no religious test shall

ever be required as a qualification to any office

or public trust under the United States"

✅ Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison and Monroe

practiced Deism — a philosophical belief in human

reason rather than revealed religion

✅ "I n God We Trust" never appeared on original American

money and "under God" wasn't added to the Pledge

of Allegiance until 1954

✅ Th e 1796 Treaty of Tripoli — signed by John Adams and

ratified unanimously by the Senate — explicitly states:

"The Government of the United States is not in any

sense founded on the Christian religion"

🔥 WHY THIS MATTERS RIGHT NOW:

56% of all Republicans now identify as Christian nationalism

adherents or sympathizers — with many falsely believing

the Founding Fathers sought to create a Christian nation.

Pete Hegseth has held monthly Christian prayer services

at the Pentagon. Mike Johnson called Islam a "misguided

religion" on the floor of Congress. A U.S. military

commander told troops that "President Trump has been

anointed by Jesus" to trigger Armageddon in Iran.

The Christian nationalism narrative rewrites history

and ignores the Founders' deliberate mission to create

a secular government where religious freedom is

protected but never enforced.
