James Carville: Trump Is Sick & Tired Of America

James Carville and Albert Hunt break down a wild primary night and make the case that Donald Trump is done — not defeated, but done, the way a man is done with a marriage he no longer wants to be in.

James opens with his thesis: Trump and the American people are locked in "an awful marriage" with two years left on the contract, and both sides are sick of each other. Trump can no longer win a Republican primary. The most anti-Trump Democrat in any race is now the frontrunner by default. This isn't a breakup still to come — James argues it already happened, and the country just hasn't fully registered it yet. "I think the country is fucking done with this guy," he says, capping it off with a nod to Fannie Lou Hamer: sick and tired of being sick and tired.

The receipts pile up fast. Two of Trump's endorsed candidates lost their Florida congressional primaries. His pick in Wyoming's governor primary lost too, to a candidate Albert calls, generously, "sane." Overseas, the Iran war is an acknowledged disaster, and Trump's response is to go crawling back to Kim Jong Un — the same dictator who took him to the cleaners once already, trading love letters for a nuclear arsenal that's roughly tripled since their first round of diplomacy.

On the primary results themselves:

Alaska Senate: Democrat Mary Peltola beat incumbent Republican Dan Sullivan by five points in the primary and heads to a November runoff. James and Albert both like her chances — she's a proven statewide winner, she has money, and Alaska's ranked-choice system works in her favor.

Florida Senate: A Democratic Socialist upset Alex Vindman, the retired lieutenant colonel and Trump-era whistleblower, in the Democratic primary. Albert calls Vindman "a courageous patriot" undone by a lackluster campaign — and warns the result hands Republicans a talking point about a socialist takeover of the party, even though the seat was never competitive to begin with.

Florida Governor: The real race to watch, per James — Democrat David Jolly, a former Republican, is the underdog against MAGA Republican Brian Donalds, but has a real shot.

South Carolina Special Senate Election: Lindsey Graham's sister stumbles badly on a debate question about Taiwan and the South China Sea, essentially admitting she doesn't know the answer. Both hosts agree it's a fatal, avoidable unforced error against Ralph Norman.
