1963 is memorable for many reasons, not least of them Martin Luther King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Arrested on Good Friday to galvanize the civil rights struggle, King composed an essay in response to eight clergymen who disagreed with the movement. Rieder, a Barnard sociology professor and author of The Word of the Lord is Upon Me, considers the "Letter" from historical, biographical, and literary angles.
