Henry was a Standard Oil president and Emily held a master’s degree in Shakespeare studies. Smitten with the Bard, the pair began collecting books and manuscripts in 1885; universities vied for the collection, but the Folgers commissioned a building on Capitol Hill to make the trove available to everyone.
