He also teaches creative writing at Emerson College and is executive editor of the NAACP publication, The Crisis. In his first novel, he returns to Gateway City—the African-American community of the stories in A Taste of Honey—focusing on four people moved in different ways by the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. The collective experiences of these individuals—a doctor, her protégé, and a pair of criminals--richly evoke the tensions and changes of urban America in the 1970s.
