Though Lawrence was awarded the 1939 Nobel for physics and much of the material that went into the first nuclear bombs came from his namesake Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, he’s been overshadowed by better-known contemporaries, a situation that Hiltzik, a Pulitzer-winning journalist, Los Angeles Times business columnist, and author of Colossus and The New Deal, remedies with this expansive biography/history.
