The sequel, River of Smoke, continued the adventures of the ship’s diverse passengers and crew, and ratcheted up the class tensions and economic stakes. As the trilogy’s concluding volume begins, it’s 1839 and the British foreign secretary is mobilizing troops to force China to rescind its embargo on opium. Thus Ghosh dramatizes the Opium Wars, bringing colonial history to vivid literary life.
