50:08Now PlayingIn her work for The New York Times in Syria, Lebanon, and at the paper’s Baghdad bureau, Zoepf, a New America fellow, closely observed the impact of the region’s turbulence on its young women, and her book holds many surprises about the reality of Arab women’s lives today. Girls are better represented than ever in Qur’anic schools, and more women than men attend universities in the Middle East; they also put their educations to use in diverse ways, pressing for greater freedom within an Islamic context and protesting for political changes. While arranged marriages and segregation still prevail in some families, women are defining their own lives in ways that amount to another kind of revolution.
