Sirleaf was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007, the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, and the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in 2012. Her victory in the 2005 Liberian presidential election closed the long period of uncertainty and turmoil both she and her nation had suffered following the coup of 1980, when she lost her position as finance minister and spent many years working outside her country. Levinson’s chronicle of Sirleaf’s dedication to building a democratic Liberia is also a valuable inside look at the roles played by both foreign policy and public relations in turning a country around.
