as posted by the channelForty-five years ago, 1,300 prisoners of the Attica Correctional Facility rebelled against the endemic mistreatment and took over the prison. The state negotiated for four days, then sent in heavily armed guards and troopers to regain control by force. Thirty-nine people died. Thompson, a University of Michigan historian who has served on a blue-ribbon panel assembled by the National Academy of Sciences to study incarceration issues, gives the first comprehensive account of this massive revolt, its violent denouement, and the repercussions. Though guards had committed human rights violations, the retaliation fell most heavily on the prisoners.
