One of today’s most accomplished fiction writers, Boyle has earned accolades ranging from the PEN/Faulkner Award for World’s End and several O. Henrys for short stories, to The Henry David Thoreau Award for excellence in nature writing. His sixteenth novel, based on the 1990s Biosphere project, showcases both his literary skills and his evocative sense of the natural environment, giving us a tour de force presentation of human nature itself. Set in the Arizona desert, the narrative follows eight scientists as they struggle to establish normality in the glass bubble of E2, the prototype for an extra-terrestrial human colony. Under constant surveillance, the “terranauts” face both internal and external pressures that threaten an explosive end to the experiment.
