Gong and Momo: A Sociolinguist's Life with Two Mexican Siamese Cats is the story of Virginia LoCastro's life over a period of a decade and a half as a human companion of two cats that became members of her household. More than a memoir, the essays of Gong and Momo delve deeply into the local context of their lives in Mexico and then the U.S. through the lens of the author's professional background and experiences as a sociolinguist. The book includes descriptions of Momo's birth, travelling across Mexico to return to the U.S. across the international border, and illnesses as well as aging together. The central theme of the essay involves the communication between and among Gong and Momo and the author, and how her perspective as a sociolinguist researcher informs her understanding of their human and nonhuman animal interactions. LoCastro includes relevant contemporary information from other animal researchers as well as from the non-academic press and media.This unique contribution to our contemporary efforts to extend our understanding of other animals ends with an essay on the changes in the author's awareness about not only cats but other animals as well as her own life as a human animal.
