as posted by the channelAs an inveterate traveler and former AP political reporter, Griest, currently assistant professor of creative nonfiction at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has seen a lot of the world, but has seldom been as shocked as she was by recent changes in her own hometown. Her ancestral land in South Texas is now cut in two by an eighteen-foot steel wall, there to stop the influx of desperate immigrants. Visiting towns near her new home on the New York/Canada border, Griest encountered another steel wall, and Mohawks of the Akwesasne Nation report experiences strikingly similar to those of Tejanos. But in both places Griest also met legions of activists, working to tear down these walls, preserve indigenous culture, and stop the repressive legacy of colonialism.
