Growing up in the Midwest, Menkedick believed her real life would start once she got away. She spent her twenties traveling alone around the world, supporting herself by teaching English or taking seasonal jobs. When she was thirty-one, she returned to Ohio and embarked on another kind of journey—a journey into motherhood. Along the way, Menkedick, the founder of Vela, earned degrees in the history of science and creative nonfiction, and her meditative essays blend evocative nature writing with introspection on questions of identity, motherhood, and creativity, drawing insight out of stories and stories out of insight.
