A third-generation Mexican-American, Cantú was raised near the U.S.-Mexico border, earned a degree in border studies, and joined the U.S. Border patrol in 2008. For four years, he scouted remote desert drug and smuggling routes, tracking fellow humans and delivering them to detention centers or morgues. He grew increasingly haunted by nightmares and left the patrol in 2012. But when an immigrant friend went to Mexico and didn’t return, Cantú was again drawn to the border, this time to find out the details and tell the stories of lives he’d only glimpsed before. Urgent and vivid, this memoir cuts through the political rhetoric to convey the true toll the border takes on everyone who comes into contact with it.
Cantú is in conversation with Eliott Ackerman, the author of Green on Blue and Dark at the Crossing.
