John McCain, senior senator from Arizona since 1987, is one of the country’s most distinguished elder statesmen, admired by people from both parties for his moral integrity, his lifelong dedication to serving his country, and his courage. Combining biography and more than one hundred photos, excerpts from McCain’s speeches, and memorable quotations, this volume pays tribute to all aspects of McCain’s life. Povich, an award-winning journalist, traces McCain’s patriotism to the influence of his father and grandfather, who were both four-star admirals, and movingly recounts his service in Vietnam as a naval aviator and his nearly six years as a prisoner of war. McCain entered politics in 1982, serving first in Congress, then in the Senate, where he continues to chair the Committee on Armed Services and speak out on behalf of truth.
Elaine S. Povich is an award-winning Washington journalist and author of three books, including John McCain: A Biography (Greenwood). She has reported from Washington for UPI, the Chicago Tribune, Newsday, and, currently, Stateline. Povich is a recipient of the prestigious Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress, among other prizes. She is an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a member of the Gridiron Club, and is a past president of the Washington Press Club Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes journalistic history and issues.
