In 1998 Carrie Bradshaw went to a party where she and her friends Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha decided to start having sex like men—that is, without emotional attachment. Through ninety-three more episodes, the women of Sex and the City met and failed to meet their goal, and in the process redefined the image of single women, pushed the boundaries of television, and launched several lifestyle and fashion trends. In this insightful retrospective, Armstrong, author of Seinfeldia and Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted, goes behind the scenes of this cultural phenomenon, tracing the genesis of the show’s scripts and interviewing its cast and writers including Candace Bushnell, author of the original "Sex and the City" New York Observer column that inspired Darren Star to adapt the series for HBO.
Jennifer Keishin Armstrong is the author of Sex and the City and Us, Seinfeldia, and Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted, a history of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She writes about pop culture for several publications, including The New York Times Book Review, Fast Company, New York’s Vulture, BBC Culture, Entertainment Weekly, and others.
