Powers, director of communications at The Writer’s Center, won the BOA Short Fiction Prize for Gravity Changes, a collection that bent the laws of physics to wonderful literary ends. His first novel draws on actual events to dramatize the melding of science and illusion that was the Soviet space program. Set in 1964, his story starts with a crisis: the Soviets have launched—and lost—five space capsules, but by using twins they’ve staged false returns. Now they’re running out of twins. Writing with a sly black humor, Powers follows the machinations of the Chief Designer behind the scheme and the last of the hapless twins caught up in it.
