Regarded as the country’s greatest contemporary choreographer, Morris grew up in Seattle where his passion for dance manifested itself early. He absorbed the area’s rich culture of Balkan, Greek, and other folk dances, then at age 16, went to Spain to study flamenco. In 1980, he formed his legendary Mark Morris Dance Group in New York; by 1986, the company was featured in the PBS Dance in America series and soon Morris was collaborating with figures including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Yo-Yo Ma, and Lou Harrison. Written with energy and wit, this memoir offers an intimate look into the heart and mind of a great visionary artist as joyful as he is provocative. Morris is in conversation with his co-author Wesley Stace.
