Robert L. Tsai discusses his book, "Practical Equality", at Politics and Prose.

Equality is an elusive ideal that has often seemed closest when pursued indirectly, through goals like protecting free speech, encouraging fair play, and prohibiting cruelty. In his illuminating history of the struggle for lawful equality in the U.S., Tsai, an American University law professor and author of America's Forgotten Constitutions, examines past challenges to equality, such as the oppression of emancipated slaves after the Civil War and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, mining history for models we can put into practice in today’s struggles against racial profiling, voting restrictions, gender discrimination, and xenophobia. Tsai is in conversation with Adam Liptak, Supreme Court correspondent for The New York Times.
