As he recounts in his funny, personable memoir, his love of different cuisines—along with an appetite for travel—began early; as the child of a diplomat, he grew up on the dishes of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, and later sampled the cuisines of many other countries. Rich in travel tales, his book also features anecdotes that convey the realities and foibles of life as a restaurant critic. Platt is in conversation with Corby Kummer, senior editor and food columnist for The Atlantic.
