Porter’s personal experience as the son of a white American father and a Mexican mother, combined with his work reporting from places including Mexico City, Tokyo, São Paulo, and Los Angeles, taught him that American racism harms not just people of color but everyone. Arguing that racial disparities are a main cause of the nation’s economic and social decline, Porter, a New York Times economic reporter and author of The Price of Everything, traces the problem to 20th century labor disputes, the War on Poverty, and Reagan’s “Welfare Queen.” Examining racism’s role in inequitable public-school funding, incarceration rates, and housing discrimination, Porter shows that the U.S. has no viable safety net and urges us to work to create a “social trust” that will overcome racism and heal divisions.
