Deeply infused with the power and limits of both folklore and the American dream, Washburn’s magical and moving debut novel starts in 1995 Hawaii when a little boy, Nainoa, falls from a ship and a shiver of sharks returns him to safety. Marked thereafter as one favored by the gods, Nainoa develops special powers but is unable to save his Filipino Hawaiian family from economic failure when their sugarcane plantation fails; trying their luck on the mainland, he and his siblings find mixed success in Spokane, San Diego, and Portland. Washburn, born and raised on the Hamakua coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i, vividly evokes the challenges of exile and diaspora through the lens of a rich family saga. Kawai Strong Washburn is in conversation with Tommy Orange, author of There, There.
