What do time traveling tap shoes and Double Dutch have in common? For 11-year-olds Jayla (Jayla Jumps In) and Ailey (The Magic in Changing Your Stars) they are a gateway into their family’s history. Join us for a conversation with Joy Jones and Leah Henderson as they discuss their new middle grade novels that embrace the joy in Black families, ties between generations, and the importance of never giving up on your dreams.
Joy Jones is a trainer, performance poet, playwright and author of several books including Tambourine Moon, which was selected as one of the best books for children by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Joy writes for the Washington Post and is the director of arts organization, The Spoken Word. She is the founder of the Double Dutch team DC Retro Jumpers which has led exhibitions and classes throughout metropolitan Washington and abroad. Joy often leads workshops on creative writing, communications and Black history.
Leah Henderson is the author of the middle grade novels The Magic in Changing Your Stars and One Shadow on the Wall, a Children’s Africana Book Award notable and a Bank Street Best Book. Her work appears in the YA anthology Black Enough: Stories of Being Young & Black in America and her picture books include Mamie on the Mound, Together We March, and A Day for Rememberin’. Leah holds a Master’s in Writing and is on faculty in the Spalding University MFA program. She loves travel, soccer, and lives in Washington, D.C. with her dog, Boston.
Joy and Leah will be joined in conversation with Mary Quattlebaum, children’s author and Washington Post Kids book reviewer.
