Fred Bowen is the author of more than twenty children’s books about sports, including Gridiron, his first collaboration with James E. Ransome about the NFL. For the past twenty years, he has written the KidsPost sports column in The Washington Post. Fred lives in Maryland with his family.
James E. Ransome’s highly acclaimed illustrations for Before She Was Harriet received the 2018 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor. His other award-winning titles include the Coretta Scott King winner The Creation; Coretta Scott King Honor Book Uncle Jed’s Barbershop; and Let My People Go, winner of the NAACP Image Award. James is a professor and coordinator of the MFA Illustration Graduate Program at Syracuse University. He lives in New York’s Hudson River Valley region with his family.
Deborah D. Taylor, a Politics & Prose contributing moderator, retired from the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD. She has chaired and served on many American Library Association committees and on the National Book Awards jury for young people’s literature. She was named the 2015 recipient of the Coretta Scott King/Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. She is a reviewer and currently serves as the chair of the Ezra Jack Keats Awards Committee.
