Ben Raines is an award-winning environmental journalist, filmmaker, and charter captain. He lives with his wife in Fairhope, Alabama.
Raines is in conversation with Darron Patterson, a native of Plateau, Alabama also known as Africatown. Darron is the great, great grandson of Pollee (‘Kupollee’) Allen, who was amongst the last load of Africans to be illegally enslaved and brought to America aboard Clotilda. He was the first African American sportswriter at the Mobile Press Register, is a four-time Associated Press and Alabama Press Association award winner for "Best Story of the Year,“ and was later feature writer and motorsports writer for The Detroit News. Darron was among the first African Americans to cover NASCAR and Indy Car racing circuits for a major metropolitan daily newspaper, and served as communications specialist for the City of Detroit's Resource Management System for three years, before returning to Alabama as Director of Communications for the United States Sports Academy in Daphne. Also an award-winning technical writer, Darron was a senior tech writer for Roush Technical Services, and is currently a senior technical writer for Airbus Defense and Space Division in Mobile. He serves on the board of directors of the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame, is Men’s Ministry co-leader at Mt. Hebron Church Ministries, and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
