Politics and Prose is delighted to partner with DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, and Pepco for an inspirational program for teens with author/illustrator Dan Santat in conjunction with his new book The Aquanaut.
Dan Santat’s new graphic novel is filled to the brim with fantastical adventure and dappled with tender currents that will warm your heart. Sophie is a girl who recently lost her scientist father in a terrible undersea accident. She spends her days aimlessly roaming Aqualand, the marine theme park maintained by her father and his brother, until one day an unusual “Aquanaut” in an old-fashioned diving suit stumbles his way into the park and turns Sophie’s life upside down. In her uncle’s lab, she discovers that the Aquanaut is not at all what he seems and could provide clues to her father’s untimely death. Now Sophie and her uncle must protect the Aquanaut (and other sea animals at the park) from a nefarious boss who doesn’t care about sea life and only wants to make money. The Aquanaut highlights the importance of keeping our oceans clean and habitable to help our endangered underwater friends live long lives. It also emphasizes the need for family communication and support during difficult times.
Dan Santat is the Caldecott Medal–winning and New York Times–bestselling author and illustrator of The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend and the road trip/time travel adventure Are We There Yet? Additionally, he has illustrated numerous picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade novels, including the Ricky Ricotta series. Dan lives in Southern California with his wife, two kids, and many, many pets.
