It is 1979 and Jasmine Zumideh is a high school senior on a mission—escape her Southern California hometown to major in journalism at her dream school, NYU. When she realizes she needs a more impressive application, Jasmine stretches the truth and says that she is Senior Class President-Elect, even though the election hasn’t taken place yet. As she is running against Gerald Thomas, whose platform includes reinstating a dress code, she is sure that winning is a foregone conclusion. Then the Iranian hostage crisis gets in the way. Soon, Gerald uses the opportunity to stir up anti-Iranian hysteria at school and turn the electorate against her. Now, Jasmine is unsure if she should keep her heritage under the radar as she wonders if winning the election is worth the pain she is causing for family and for herself.
Susan Azim Boyer got her start as a screenwriter, writing and directing the independent feature All You Need. Recently, she began writing young adult fiction featuring Iranian American heroines who make messy, complicated choices that rapidly snowball into avalanches. Jasmine Zumideh Needs a Win is her young adult fiction debut. She currently lives in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area with her husband and dog.
Naseem Jamnia was born in Chicago and raised by Iranian immigrants. Their writing has appeared in many places, including The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, The Rumpus, The Writer's Chronicle. They were a 2019 Lambda Literary Fellow in Young Adult Fiction, a 2022 Otherwise Fellow, and were named the inaugural Samuel R. Delany Fellow from CatStone Books. Their debut novella, The Bruising of Qilwa, was released in August 2022.
