Jean-Martin Bauer has served with the World Food Programme in the Sahel and central Africa and has responded to food emergencies in Afghanistan and Syria. Bauer has led WFP country offices in the Republic of the Congo and in Haiti. His work has also focused on leveraging digital tech and analytics to fight hunger. A Washington, DC, native, Bauer holds degrees from the London School of Economics and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Bauer is in conversation with Anna Gawel. As the managing editor of two news organizations, a reporter and a producer, Gawel has spent her career shaping compelling stories for digital, print and broadcast on subjects ranging from U.S. politics to world news. She currently serves as managing editor of Devex, an online media platform for the global development community that is read by over 1 million professionals. She previously worked as the managing editor of The Washington Diplomat, the flagship publication of D.C.’s diplomatic community. She’s had hundreds of articles published on international affairs, U.S. foreign policy, politics, security, trade, travel and the arts on topics ranging from the impact of State Department budget cuts to Caribbean efforts to fight climate change. She was also a broadcast producer and digital editor at WTOP News and host of the Global 360 podcast. She holds a journalism degree from the University of Maryland in College Park.
