After a life-changing car accident as a teenager, Judge Patricia Broderick had two choices: remain in the safe haven of her parents or reinvent herself and find a new path through life as a woman in a wheelchair.

She chose the latter. Pat finished her college degree, earned her master's, and began working as a probation officer. Perturbed by what she observed in the courtroom, she decided to become a lawyer. She graduated from law school, passed the bar exam, and went to work. Her illustrious career, spanning roles from a volunteer social worker in Ecuador to a senior judge in the District of Columbia, embodies her unwavering commitment to public service and justice. Judge Broderick has influenced the legal landscape across various disciplines, all while fostering legal education at top law schools and advocating for diversity and women's advancement in the legal profession.

Judge Broderick’s memoir, Reinventing the Wheel, is a testimony to overcoming pain, fear, and prejudice ,but tempered by a resolve to carry on traveling and having fun in her own way. Just ask Pat’s ski instructor.

Judge Broderick is in conversation with Julia Malone. Malone has spent more than 30 years in journalism, beginning in Boston where she covered the school system and held editing positions at The Christian Science Monitor. She won a transfer in 1980 to Washington, D.C., where she has covered the White House, the courts, and Congress, as well as homeland security, campaign finance laws, and investigations into waste, fraud and abuse. She followed the major developments on Capitol Hill for the Monitor and later moved to the Washington bureau of the Cox Newspaper chain, which includes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She was the Cox White House correspondent, covering presidential summits abroad, a visit to U.S. troops in the Arabian Desert, and political conventions and campaigns. In addition to reporting and analyzing events, she has focused on ethical and mismanagement issues, the failure to enforce nursing home standards, questionable travel by lawmakers, and budgetary earmarks awarded to campaign contributors and campaign finance reform efforts. During her coverage of Capitol Hill, she was elected by fellow reporters to the Standing Committee of Correspondents. She was inducted into the Washington Gridiron Club, the country’s oldest journalist club, limited to 65 active members. Since her retirement from Cox Newspapers, she has worked part-time as an editorial consultant and continues to live in Washington.
