The Kurdish YPG fought some of the bloodiest battle against Daesh, including the liberation of Raqqa. They were the West's boots on the ground in a vicious war against Islamist militants.
But Turkey wants to create a buffer zone in northeastern Syria and, when the American soldiers left, launched an invasion.
Kurds feel betrayed, an emotion they've grown familiar with since the end of the first world war.
JOE spoke to Macer Gifford, a Brit who volunteered to fight in the YPG's international brigades, Dani Ellis, who lives with the Kurds in Syria, and Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour party, about how best to respond to the crisis.
