In this video, we head to Clacton-on-Sea to hear directly from the constituents of Nigel Farage after a major political revelation: their own MP and Reform UK leader is calling for Britain to withdraw from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Farage, who won Clacton at the 2024 general election, has been vocal in his belief that leaving the ECHR is the only way to “take back control” of Britain’s borders and stop small boat crossings in the English Channel. But critics argue that such a move would rip up hard-won protections for ordinary people – from the right to a fair trial and freedom of speech, to safeguards against torture and unlawful detention.

In Clacton, many residents were shocked to learn that their representative wants to dismantle these fundamental rights. Others voiced concern about how leaving the ECHR could affect everything from workers’ protections to women’s rights and safeguards for disabled people. For some, it raised a deeper question: if Farage is willing to roll back these rights, what does that mean for the democratic values he claims to defend?

The European Court of Human Rights is not an EU institution – the UK helped write its founding charter after the horrors of the Second World War. Leaving it would make Britain the first European country to walk away from the court, putting it alongside authoritarian states that have refused to recognise its rulings.

This video captures the raw, unfiltered reactions of voters in Clacton as they come to terms with what Farage’s proposal really means for their lives. Is this about sovereignty and control, or about stripping away freedoms that protect us all? Watch the full report to find out.
