This week, the Trump administration ramped up tensions with Venezuela, flirted openly with the prospect of war, and offered a confused message of “peace”.
While senior officials talked up “boat attacks,” “terrorists,” and justified a massive military buildup in the Caribbean, critics accused the administration of manufacturing a crisis to benefit arms dealers, secure access to Venezuelan oil, and justify a strike that could have violated international law. Members of Congress demanded answers, asking why the White House was pushing for conflict despite the lack of congressional authorisation, and despite Trump’s recent pardon of a convicted narco-trafficker.
And, in the middle of all this, Trump won the very first FIFA Peace Prize. He boasted about “settling” eight wars, claimed to have fixed inflation, and told a series of rambling stories about tariffs, electricity bills, and nearly fell asleep during a summit celebrating his involvement in ending conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
