On the floor of the House of Commons, Labour figures including Emily Thornberry, John McDonnell, Richard Burgon, Kim Johnson and Alex Sobel challenged the government’s response to US airstrikes on Venezuela and the seizing of Maduro and his wife. MPs repeatedly accused the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary of abandoning international law, sidestepping the UN Charter, and showing cowardice in the face of Trump’s actions.
Thornberry warned that if a powerful country can abduct the leader of another state without consequence, the world risks sliding into a “might is right” global order. John McDonnell went further, accusing the government of appeasing Donald Trump and warning of future conflicts. Richard Burgon and Kim Johnson pressed Cooper on why the UK has failed to publicly condemn what they call an illegal act of imperialism and a clear breach of Article 2.4 of the United Nations Charter.
