Mancs react to Andy Burnham trying to run as their MP

Andy Burnham has found himself, yet again, back in the national political spotlight over rumours of a leadership challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

In Greater Manchester, Labour MP for Gorton and Denton Andrew Gwynne stepped down citing ill health. That move has triggered a by-election in Gorton and Denton, and almost immediately people started asking the big question: could Andy Burnham be heading back to Westminster?

Burnham, who’s currently serving his third term as Mayor of Greater Manchester, hasn’t confirmed anything yet. But the idea of him running has clearly rattled parts of the Labour Party. Some MPs and local activists have been openly enthusiastic, seeing Burnham as a popular, plain-speaking figure who could strengthen Labour’s northern base. Others — especially figures close to Keir Starmer’s leadership team — are much less keen.

Reports over the last two days suggest senior Labour figures and members of the party’s National Executive Committee are discussing ways to block or discourage Burnham from standing. The concern is that his return could distract from Labour’s national strategy or reopen internal ideological tensions just as the party is trying to project unity. That’s sparked accusations of heavy-handed, top-down control, with union leaders and grassroots members warning that shutting Burnham out would look undemocratic.

At the same time, commentators have been revisiting Burnham’s wider political vision — often dubbed “Manchesterism” — which focuses on devolution, public ownership, and shifting power away from Westminster. While not new, those ideas are being talked about again because they frame what a Burnham comeback might actually mean.
