On Saturday the 16th of May, the “Unite the Kingdom” Rally ostensibly gathered to “defend our freedom, protect our children, and take our country back”. It was the smaller of two protests taking place in central London. At least a quarter of a million people attended a pro-Palestine rally to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Nakba - the 1948 mass displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the creation of Israel - and to unite against the far-right.
On the rally’s main stage, a man covered in bacon played the cello. Three women in niqabs derobed to reveal young French influencers as the crowd chanted “take it off”. And the mother of Rhiannon White, who was murdered by an asylum seeker staying at the hotel where she worked, gave a tragic speech outlining the distressing circumstances of her death.
Ahead of the rally, 11 overseas speakers were banned from entering the UK, including the anti-Islam influencer Valentina Gomez, who, indefiance, promised to enter the UK by small boat - but did not. The notable absence of Elon Musk, who, last year, addressed the crowd via video link was notable. Across six hours, 33 speakers took to the stage in spitting rain, many to bemoan a supposed lack of free speech on loud speakers pointing towards Parliament.
