as posted by the channelThe Karen Read is on trial in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, who was found unresponsive in the snow outside a fellow officer’s home in Canton, Massachusetts, on January 29, 2022. Read is accused of fatally striking him with her SUV. She has pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The prosecution alleges that Read, in a fit of rage, backed into O’Keefe and fled the scene.
The defense contends that Read is being framed as part of a law enforcement cover-up. They argue that O’Keefe was assaulted inside the home where he was found and that evidence was mishandled or planted to implicate Read.
The first trial in 2024 ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. Her retrial began in April 2025 and is expected to last 6-8 weeks.
